Assessment of viability in the bacterial standing stock of the Antarctic sea from the Indian side ArchiMer
Loka Bharathi, Pa; Nair, S; Bd De Souza, Mj; Chandramohan, D.
During the austral summer, we examined the bacterial population along the cruise track extending from 70degrees S and 18degrees E to 30degrees S and 35degrees E. During the cruise, three distinct fractions of the bacterioplankton viz. total count, total direct viable and retrievable counts were simultaneously enumerated in these waters. In the stations south of the convergent region designated as section I the population ranged within 10(8-9) L-1 whereas in the north of the region designated as section 11 they were one order higher and ranged from 10(9-10) L-1. The percentage of viability in the region was high corresponding to the generally high chlorophyll and primary productivity encountered in the eastern Aghulas bank. The study substantiates the...

Devenir des bactéries dans les réseaux trophiques des vasières intertidales : le cas de brouage (Baie de Marennes-Oléron) ArchiMer
Pascal, Pierre-yves.
Bacteria are highly abundant and productive in intertidal mudflat sediments. By analogy with pelagic system, it has been suggested that bacteria play an important role in benthic food web. Due to technical difficulties, numbers of studies dealing with benthic bacterivory are not numerous and give conflicting results. A method using community of 15N enriched bacteria as tracer was developed in order to measure grazing of meiofauna and macrofauna. Since enriched bacteria present characteristics of size, activity and diversity close to natural ones, bias due to selective bacterial ingestion by grazers are limited. Due to tidal cycles, intertidal mudflat constitutes highly variable environment at short time scale. Since those variations may influence...

Etat des connaissances sur la pathologie chez les mollusques bivalves ArchiMer
Fouche, Dominique.
A short description of the disease causing organisms affecting bivalves is presented in this document, including the diagnosis, the oustanding research and bivalve husbandry. Mollusc populations may be safe from disease epizootics if an early prevention of disease is coupled with a strict regulatory system on transfer (according to what happens in agriculture). The species to culture may be thoroughly selected and risky populations moved. Imported stocks are strictly controlled. The researchcs's target is to improve the diagnosis tools and try to find resistant mollusc strains. Epidemiological surveys are also necessary to control diseases.

Exploration des communautés virales thermophiles dans les écosystèmes chauds des Terres australes et antarctiques françaises ArchiMer
Parikka, Kaarle Joonas.
Viruses thrive in all types of ecosystems where life is found. They represent the most abundant biological entity of our biosphere. Though several studies have been conducted on viral abundance and dynamics in mesophilic aquatic ecosystems, these aspects remain largely unexplored in extremophilic environments, such as hot springs. In this study, prokaryotic and associated viral communities of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands hot springs were explored. First, prokaryotic cells and Virus-like particles (VLP) were enumerated in several terrestrial and inshore hot springs. The results reveal an abundance of 105 - 106 particles/ml in both types of hot springs studied. The virus-to-prokaryote ratios (VPR) were generally low, confirming thus actual...

Mortalités d'huîtres creuses adultes (Crassostrea gigas) et infection à Vibrio aestuarianus - AESTU ArchiMer
Travers, Marie-agnes; Degremont, Lionel; De Lorgeril, Julien; Azema, Patrick; Montagnani, Caroline; Benabdelmouna, Abdellah; Nicolas, Jean-louis; Le Roux, Frederique.

Waechter, Magali.
Summer mortality has been observed on oyster spat Crassostrea gigas since 1991 on french coasts. In our study, we deseribed symptoms observed during the mortality, especially adductor muscle weakness and we isolated strains on Zobell medium and TCBS from moribund spat. Strains isolated during a high mortality (60 %) were selected by experimental pathology on spat. Inoculation by bath led us to select a pathogenic strain (TNEMF6) for oyster spat. Phenotypic identification, phylogenetic study on 16S rDNA and quantitative DNA/DNA hybridisation showed that this strain belongs to Vibrio splendidus biovar II. Phenotyping and ribotyping with strains isolated during the study showed that only TNNIII7 and TNMB5 are similar to the pathogenic strain TNEMF6....
